Make a (Thrifty!) Day of It
It’s finally spring in New Hampshire. The woodpeckers are tapping their songs on the trees, the spring peepers are croaking to attract their mates, and we are unencumbered by heavy winter coats, boots, scarves and hats. New Englanders know how to take advantage of a beautiful day and want nothing more than to get out of the house. However, with a family to nurture and provide for, it needs to be affordable. We have the perfect formula for an inexpensive fun day out in Keene for your whole family-and it won’t mean eating beans and pasta for a week to do it!
The Flight Deck
Start your Saturday or Sunday at The Flight Deck located at Keene’s Dillant-Hopkins airport. You can start your day off light with a delicious egg sandwich, or fuel up for a busy day with The Big Flyer with 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 slices of bacon, and 2 pieces of sausage, home fries, and toast. Although my personal favorite is the to-die-for stuffed French toast made with strawberries. Your littlest diners will enjoy starting the day with a happy face pancake with a slice of bacon or the Funfetti pancakes. As you are eating your meal and planning your day, you can watch planes arriving and departing and take in fabulous view of Mt. Monadnock.
If your day is starting a little later, take advantage of our all-you-can-eat salad bar or endless bowl of soup. Have a pint size gourmet dining with you? Have one of the appetizers as the meal. Our Oink n’ Cluck, with 2 “hogwings” and 3 chicken wings and veggie sticks will fill ‘em up and get them ready for fun. Try one of our tasty sandwiches made with Boar’s head cold cuts served with our hand cut fries. If a perfect burger is more your speed, you can have one of our many specialty burgers or a burger you’ve designed. Here at The Flight Deck we aim to please. It’s the perfect start to a great spring day.
Twinkletown Miniature Golf
My family and I have often had the pleasure of golfing at Twinkletown, and by golfing, I mean the sport of families, miniature golfing! There are all different challenges on this 18 hole course including a “covered bridge” and a little log cabin. It’s also pleasantly shaded to keep off the sun on hot days. The first round of golf is only $3.75 per person with additional rounds costing only $.50! In addition, there are batting cages costing a dollar for 12 pitches. It’s fun and affordable, making it ideal for a family outing.
Life is Sweet Candy Store
Nowhere can you get more wow factor as a parent than taking your child to a candy store. Life is Sweet is an exemplary model of an old time candy store with glass jars filled with nostalgic candies (Bit o’honey, anyone?), a wall of M&M’s, a glass case filled with different kinds of fudge and a bakery case loaded with specialty cupcakes. As if any of these wouldn’t make you a hero, Life is Sweet also serves ice cream, blizzards, shakes and smoothies. Or let your little Picasso make a sugar creation using a machine where your child can make their own “sugar straws” from colored sugar. For a parent pick-me-up, be sure to grab yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy your candy loot either inside in the treat nook or outside at one of our tables overlooking the gazebo and central square.
Check out a Park
Our fair city of Keene loves its green space and has plenty to offer in the way of parks. There’s beautiful Ashuelot River Park with miles of trails overlooking the Ashuelot River and colorful foliage and trees. Wheelock park offers a fun playground, tennis courts, a hiking trail and in warmer weather, a pool for use. At sunset, plan to visit Robin Hood Park and watch the fish and wild life surrounding a scenic pond while your children play just a few feet away at the playground. Pack a Frisbee, some sunblock and maybe even a fishing pole and enjoy the bounty our city has to offer. Best of all, there is no fee for the majority of activities at any of these parks. Just bring your sense of adventure!
We love the city of Keene. It’s why we choose to live, work and raise our families here. We want you to love it too, whether you are playing tourist in your own town, visiting from afar or just want a memorable (and affordable!) Spring day with your family.
